If you are an entrepreneur you have probably come across the word BRANDING. It can leave a lot of people scratching their heads as to what in the world that word even means. If you haven’t already, you will instantly learn you need to be branded. Branding is essential on your journey to being a #momboss. But what in the heck is it? Everyone says you need it. Pinterest does an amazing job of showing you mood boards of it but what is it?
First, you have to know who you are and who your Target Market is. The world is not your target market. I know we WANT the world but lets be clear here- THEY ARE NOT. When you close your eyes and see someone reading your blog or hitting purchase on your site you see someone. Who is it? Let’s get specific and answer these questions:
What is their gender?
What do they look like? (age, hair, eyes, weight, clothes they wear)
Do they have kids?
What is their occupation?
Where do they shop for groceries?
Where do they shop for themselves?
What are their hobbies?
What do they value?
Other-List anything else that you think is important to this person and get VERY SPECIFIC
You may think the above exercise is pointless but DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. If you do not know who your buyers or subscribers are then your brand could push them away instead of bringing them in to your website, store or blog. By clearly, intentionally and specifically defining your target market, you can brand yourself appropriately and write appropriately to make sure you are speaking directly to your market when it comes to putting information out into the world.
Now, your next exercise is to write down 10 words that describe you and who you want to attract. Why do this? Well, simply put, anytime I put something out into the world of the interwebs, I check to see if it matches my words. My personal words are:
MOM, BOSS, FUNNY, GENUINE, DETERMINED, UNIQUE, FAMILY, NATURAL, FUN, ORGANIC
Obviously, when I write a post or article, I cannot match all 10 words all the time, but I can do my best to match up a good portion of my list to each piece. That is my main goal with every single post. Cross reference your words with your post and make sure you’re staying CONSISTENT with your posting. Trust me, you do not want to go rouge on your posts. It throws off your loyal followers and has them guessing at your message. By staying consistent with your message, your followers know what to expect and show up more frequently to see what you have to see/offer. So get out your piece of paper and write down your own 10 words.
Picking out a color scheme is a big part in your overall vibe and is, in my mind, a ton of fun. ? Your colors can mean different things. If you use darker, bolder colors you could attract more males, if you use pastel colors or pink and purple you will definitely be attracting a more feminine crowd. More earthy colors tend to attract a more organic client, and bright colors such as yellow, orange, and turquoise put out a happy, energetic vibe. It is crazy how your color pallet will attract a certain crowd so this is really important in your process. My suggestion is go to Pinterest.com and in the search bar type in “mood board for (insert your vibe here)” and start looking through the different color matches. It is a great place to start but then create your own board for the colors that really speak to you . When you are done looking and pinning it is important to go through your board and look for a common theme. Does it match up with your ideal client and do the colors make you happy and excited to move forward with your brand?
Picking out your font is just like picking out your colors. It is fun but can be overwhelming. Use Pinterest for this step too. In the search bar type in font inspiration then start making a board keeping note of which fonts really speak to you. Again, once you are done with this step go back and look at your Pinterest board and compare the fonts there. Cross check them with your color scheme and your ideal client. If all boxes match up then I would lock in on those and move forward. Stay away from using too many different font styles with your branding. You want a clean cohesive look and want to choose fonts that are easy to read, your fonts might be fun and cute but it your readers must struggle to understand your message, they’ll click away and head somewhere else. Choosing 2-3 fonts that work well together and clearly match your ideal branding is the goal.
Now that you have come this far, you have certainly put in a lot of time and hard work. Hopefully, you’re still excited about nailing down your own brand. The one thing you must know that before the logo, before the website, YOU ARE YOUR BRAND.
The biggest mistake I have seen (and experienced) an entrepreneur make is copying branding from a successful person in their field. I have seen it time and time again and quickly they learn it probably will not go the way they want. This has more to deal with the fact that they don’t realize the brand (colors, look of a website) is not what is making them successful-it is simply the person running it. THEY are what makes the brand. I cannot tell you how many times I searched and searched and SEARCHED for a website and copied down sentences verbatim thinking that that was going to be THE LINE of text that was going to bring me all the clients and all of the money I desired. Oh boy, how silly was I? Not silly honestly, just 1) not educated enough and 2) I so badly wanted it to work! 3) obviously copying someone else’s work is plagiarism so friends DO NOT DO THAT. ?? Like just don’t. I’ve done it and been on the other side of it and both times it stinks.
So any text you have written down word for word from someone else and are about to put it out to the world as your own-just remove that right now. MMMk??? Good. Phew! Ok so my point of all this is to create something that is yours. YOU are your brand which means a part of you has to go into every ounce of your site. Your branding will not work without your vibe. The way you write, the way you present yourself, your life, traditions, history, wins and losses….all goes in to your brand. Your brand is how people know you. If you want to be known as the crazy mom that drinks wine every night ?? that’s cool, if you are the pinterest perfect mom that can craft like no other ??♀️-not only 1)I hate you but (just kidding….kinda) 2) that’s also cool because that is who you are! Be yourself! Own it! Rock it! Put it out into the world. But I’m telling you right now if you try on branding that is not natural to you your target market people will see right through it, just like a dress that’s too tight. So don’t even waste your time. Do not compare yourselves to others. DO NOT do that to yourself. Create something that is completely yours and let it bloom in the interwebs.
Best of luck in you branding journey!!! I hope this helped you and if it didn’t feel free to email me or by leaving a comment below!
Side note:Branding is hard which is why they have Brand Experts like myself. Nailing down what works and what doesn’t can be a tricky world. Do not be afraid to outsource this area. If you are losing time working on your blog or putting your product out into the world it is time to outsource.
