I get asked this question a lot… “Why would I invest in a website when I can do everything I need on Facebook or Instagram for free”. Seriously, that is a great question. You see your website is your HOME, your storefront as you will. No matter what you are putting out into the world you need an internet home. This is one place you get to control 100%. You control the user experience and you get to tailor it to however you want and you get to show off what you have. Whether you are selling a product or some type of service people need to come to your home to buy whatever you are offering.
One thing I would like you to think about…What if tomorrow Facebook and Instagram shut down? What if all of your followers went away. Would they know how to get in touch with you? Probably not. There are somethings we will talk about to make sure you’re taking the right steps to owning your followers but that will be for another post. This post we are talking about the necessity for a website and why if you want to be taken seriously as a business person you need an internet home.
When we use social media all of your efforts should be to get your followers off of Facebook or Insta to head to your website. Social media is a tool to build trust and gain interest. Your website is where the sale is made and you seal the deal. Between social media and your site there should be no question why they need you in their life and why they need what you are offering. If you put all of your eggs in one basket (social media) you are fighting the good entrepreneur fight with one hand tied behind your back. All of your efforts on social media to get your potential customer engaged and ready to buy from you and then you have no place to send them to. You need a place to send them to.
Another way a website is so valuable to your business is in the way it provides credibility. I used to be a family photographer and I never realized how hard it would be to find someone I liked to take our own family photos. Like most of you I have come across images I liked of my friends and started the “social media stalking” to find out who took the image. Time and time again I noticed the photographer pages I was ending up at were their Facebook page ( or even worse their personal page) and from there that was all that was offered. I wanted a website to click on. I needed more information. Usually there was just a gallery that may or may not have been updated. I wanted to see their work their, pricing and get to know them better and they did not have a place to send me??? I honestly get so mad because of it. Sure, I would have been able to call them and ask them the right questions but when there are so many options out there it is easy to pass them up and go on to the next. So many times this has happened! My thought process is this-you want me to take you seriously, and charge me to take you seriously but you do not have a website? Totally not happening. And please do not get me wrong-I was a starving photographer when I first started out. I know what it is like to make every penny count and not have the means to launch some extravagant website. Nobody is saying that is necessary. Heck your website does not even have to be perfect. But to not have one, is to simply not have a home.
